From Pixel to Perspective

Perspective is our particular attitude towards or way of regarding something; it is a point of view. In the graphic arts it is an approxmate representation on a flat surface (such as paper), of an image as it is seen by the eye.

The two most characteristic features of perspective are that objects are smaller as their distance from the observer increases; and that they are foreshortened, meaning that an object’s dimensions along the line of sight are shorter than its dimensions across the line of sight. (Source: Wikipedia)

Isn’t this just beautiful? This is something that gives the human mind a dimension of its own. I realized this during my recent trip to KL-Malasia. The Petronas Twin Towers are an amazing structural design and a sight to behold for the tourists from all across the world. I wanted to click a picture of the twin towers, to cherish this moment. Stepping back, I opened my index finger and thumb to a distance where one of the towers fit within them – and clicked! The very next moment I realized that one of the world’s tallest buildings was within my hand! Of course quite a few would already have tried this. But the million-dollar question remains: Were you able to think beyond that depiction? The power of pixel has limitless effects on your brain. For me, one of the world’s tallest buildings suddenly became small enough to fit in the tiny space between my index finger and thumb. My view of the world changed.

"Discovery consists not in seeking new lands but in seeking with new eyes" – Marcel Proust

I realized that we have the power to make things look big, small, comforting or scary! More than the situation, it’s our anticipation that defines the value and scale of things. Our perspective is our reality. It shapes our world and defines the quality of our interactions with our environment, our culture. The pixel we see on a screen is merely a dot, and a collection of those forms the complete picture. To develop a perspective, it helps to have an open mind. To give more clarity to this thought, take Uber for instance. It's a five-year old business and has become a US$55 Billion company. Uber develops, markets and operates the Uber mobile app, which allows consumers (riders) with smartphones to submit a trip request, which is then routed to Uber drivers who use their own cars. Travis Kalanick, the founder of Uber observed something that no one else saw. He discovered a simple commuting need around the world, which is going from Point A to point B, with safety and convenience. He might just have asked one simple question, “I am an individual who lives on this planet called Earth with billions of people. How can I be of value to them?” In answering this question his perspective became an innovative commuting solution for millions of people around the world. Think about it, there’s so much to do. Limitless opportunities lie in front of us. All we need to have is perspective! Gain Perspective, acquire purpose and become useful!
