Profile
Umair Jaliawala founded Torque in Karachi in 2008 and has spent 18 years turning it into a consultancy of 328 clients across 27 industries and 34 cities: telecoms, banks, retail networks, manufacturers, the development sector and four provincial governments. He is its Founder and CEO and still its master trainer, in the room rather than above it.
His own work sits where leadership, enterprise and technology meet. The LET frame that runs through most of what he designs. He builds the diagnosis before the programme: interviews first, then an intervention aimed at what is actually turning people off, which is rarely what the brief said it was. He leads Torque's four corporate signatures: Lead with EI, Break the Cage, Sales Cheetah and Magic of Customer Service, and runs the Train the Trainer certification every associate in the tribe comes through.
At institutional scale he led and scaled the School of Leadership and its Foundation from 2014 to 2019, growing it into a nationwide NGO that reached more than a million young people across 110 cities and villages in partnership with 150+ NGOs and CBOs, and co-led delivery of the British Council DICE Fellowship across 14 cities. Alongside Torque he is a director at The Ajency.
Away from the corporate room he has staged more than a hundred Dastaan storytelling sessions across Pakistan: most of them in auditoriums, and has given over a thousand sessions, dialogues and podcasts pro bono. He works on entrepreneurship and social entrepreneurship, community participation, and the inclusion of minorities, persons with disabilities and other genders, and, through Torque, on pushing client organisations towards the triple bottom line.
Two books are coming. The Force is on his own development work and on recognising that something larger plays through us when we get out of the way. From Zero shares its name with the venture he runs on food security, heirloom crops, affordable organic food and integrated human-animal-plant ecosystems.
